GWU Uses 8-0 Run to Complete Comeback Win Over Georgia Southern

Box Score BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb knocked off Georgia Southern on Saturday evening 82-78 after scoring eight unanswered to end the night and claim its third win of the year.  
 
The Eagles led 22-18 after the first quarter scoring 10 points off the fastbreak and 20 coming from inside the paint. Gardner-Webb continued to keep the Eagles close, tying the game at 37 with a pair of free throws by Alasia Smith just before time expired.
 
In the third, the Eagles started to break away, hitting getting up to a double-digit lead and were up 64-57 at its conclusion.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Runnin' Bulldogs started on an 8-0 run. Gardner-Webb's Ki'Ari Cain tied it with 8:34 left in the game and had Smith hit the go-ahead jumper at 8:06. Despite the scoring stretch, GSU responded with a 9-0 unanswered stretch to regain the lead.
 
Each team converted on a pair of technical free throws and brought the score to 78-76 with 1:23 to play followed by Layken Cox converting on a layup to tie the game on the ensuing possession. With 21.3 on the clock, Jhyesska Williams drove to the left basket and banked in a go-ahead bucket.
 
Georgia Southern called a timeout and as they were bringing the ball up the floor, Williams stole it from Simone James and converted on the fast break to give GWU a four-point advantage. The Eagles were unable to score, and Gardner-Webb ran out the clock for their third win of the season.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs had four players finish in double figures with Williams and Bevis leading the charge with 18 each. Smith had 17 and Cain netted 14, including 4-of-8 shooting from behind the arc.   
 
Williams also led the team in rebounding with 15, seven offensive and eight defensive while adding five assists. Smith ended the game with a double-double as well bringing down 12 boards while adding four steals.
 
Gardner-Webb has their next game on Wednesday, November 23 hosting College of Charleston at 3:00 p.m. as the 'Dogs look to remain undefeated at home in the 2022-23 campaign.
