BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb fell 3-0 to Winthrop on Saturday afternoon, falling to 7-7 in conference play. The Runnin' Bulldogs now are tied for fourth in the Big South with Charleston Southern and they each have two games left to play next weekend.
In the first set, the teams traded points early, but Winthrop broke loose when trailing 7-6. The Eagles went on a 9-1 scoring stretch, holding a 15-8 lead at the end of it. Gardner-Webb continued to fight back, tying the set at 19 and taking a one-point lead three times late in the set. Winthrop tallied three unanswered points to win the set a take an early 1-0 advantage in the match.
The Eagles took a quick 8-3 lead in the second. The Runnin' Bulldogs tallied six unanswered to gain a 9-8 lead, the first three points each came off kills by McKenna Timmerman. After that point, neither team was able to gain more than a two-point advantage over the other. Winthrop forced a set point at 24-23, which GWU won, but the Eagles rattled off a pair to claim the second 26-24. The third set saw Winthrop expand the edge with a 25-20 win in the final set.
Avery Cole and Timmerman each finished with 11 kills for the team leads with Cole adding three blocks. Mikayla Logan and
Kylee Garrison had eight kills apiece. Garrison blocked three Winthrop attacks and Logan had two. Morgan Hornaday continued to find her teammates dishing 36 assists on the day while making 10 digs. Four 'Dogs ended the game with double-digit digs.
Sophia Bolden and Garrison tied for the most for GWU with 13. Sophia Kotsovolos had ten.
Today's match concluded the 2022 home schedule for the Runnin' Bulldogs. GWU will be back in action on Friday, November 11 at High Point with a first serve at 6:00 p.m.
