Gardner-Webb Dominates Battle of the Bulldogs With 32-9 Win At The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb jumped out to a 16-0 lead and cruised to a 32-9 win Friday night at The Citadel in Southern Conference wrestling action.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-2, 4-2 SoCon) continued to roll in league matches on the road, improving to 4-1 away from home against SoCon competition.

Friday night's match started at 165 pounds and RJ Mosley picked up a clutch takedown 49 seconds into overtime to beat Selwyn Porter 3-1. Evan Schenk followed with an 8-5 decision at 174 pounds to put the 'Dogs up 6-0, and Jha'Quan Anderson bolted to a 6-0 lead in the first period to spark a 10-1 major decision at 184 pounds.

Sam Mora stepped up at 197 pounds to push Gardner-Webb out to an even bigger lead. Mora took an early 4-1 lead after a pair of takedowns in the first period, but found himself down after a second-period escape by Ben Stemmet. Mora rallied, taking Stemmet down and recording a pin in 3:31 for a 16-0 Gardner-Webb edge.

The Citadel (4-5, 2-3 SoCon) stemmed the tide with a pin at 285 pounds by Michael McAleavey, but Gardner-Webb rattled off four consecutive wins to wrap up its team scoring.

Aedyn Concepcion cruised to a 6-1 win at 125, scoring early and going up 5-0 after two periods. He added a final point on riding time.

Todd Carter fell behind 3-0 after two periods at 133 pounds, but scored on a takedown 32 seconds into the third and took Jake Rotunda down for a pin at the 6:42 mark for the win.

Trevon Majette built on his recent success with a 15-2 major decision at 141 pounds, putting the bout away very early. Majette led 10-2 after the first period in a high-scoring matchup, scoring on a takedown, a reversal and near falls – four points and two points each coming in the final 28 seconds of the period.

Majette pushed his lead to 14-2 after two periods and capped the win with riding time for the final margin.

Brandon Bright bounced back with a 6-5 decision at 149 pounds to cap Gardner-Webb's run, escaping with 41 seconds left in the bout to win. Bright scored on takedowns in the first and the second.

Gardner-Webb will close out its regular season with Senior Night next Friday in Paul Porter Arena. The 'Dogs will host Presbyterian at 7:00 pm on ESPN+.
