SPARTANBURG, N.C. – Gardner-Webb traveled down to Wofford on Wednesday afternoon and came away with a 4-3 win, ending GWU's four-match skid. The match came down to a third set on court 4, with
Elin Hellberg prevailing to claim the team's win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got to an early lead by winning the doubles point.
Manon Delsol and Hellberg dominated in the topflight match to win 6-0. After losing on court 3, GWU's #2 duo of
Teodora Ristic and
Maria Jardim clinched the point with a 6-3 score.
Ristic continued her dominance in singles, getting a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set win on court 1, extending the GWU lead to 2-0.
Following that defeat, Wofford claimed the next three decisions, jumping out to a 3-2 lead. Liz Massie and Brianna Wilbur each won in straight sets in positions 3 and 5. Emely Kahrs then defeated
Emilia Roslund 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 at #6 for their third point of the afternoon.
Gardner-Webb's
Manon Delsol's 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win on court #2 made the match come down to court #4. Hellberg won 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to get the decision for the 'Dogs.
The Runnin' Bulldogs have their next match Sunday, February 27 against Hampton in GWU's conference opener. The first serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
