Softball Splits First Day Of Action At Pirate Invitational

Greenville, N.C. – Gardner-Webb softball split its action on Friday at the 2020 Pirate Invitational on the campus of East Carolina University.

Scores: Game One: Villanova 1, Gardner-Webb 0; Game Two: Gardner-Webb 6, Fairleigh Dickinson 5
Records: Gardner-Webb (6-6), Fairleigh Dickinson (1-5), Villanova (4-7)
Location: Max R. Joyner Family Stadium (Greenville, N.C.)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Game One: Villanova 1, Gardner-Webb 0
With a scoreless game going into the seventh inning, Villanova stole the game during their at-bat. The Wildcats scored on a stolen base and throwing error on the Runnin' Bulldogs catcher to end the first game of the day.
 
Sydney Gilbert (2-2) took the loss from the circle, pitching a total of 6.1 innings she allowed seven hits, one run, and struck out four batters.  
 
Araceli Pesqueira and Bridgette Strobl each had a hit against the Wildcats.
 
Game Two: Gardner-Webb 6, Fairleigh Dickinson 5
At the conclusion of the seventh inning, the game was all tied up at 4-4.
 
The Knights took the lead during their at-bat in the eighth inning, scoring off of a double RBI, making it a 5-4 ballgame. Then during the 'Dogs at bat Bridgette Strobl scored on a wild pitch, and Abbey Goodrum scored on a single hit by Sydney Gilbert. Allowing the Runnin' Bulldogs to seal the win in walk-off fashion.

COACH QUOTABLE
"I'm proud of our fight today and the entire year," said head coach Bailey Wigness. "We are putting ourselves in positions to win every single game. Once we get the bats rolling there's no telling what this team can accomplish."
 
UP NEXT
Gardner-Webb will be back tomorrow for day two of the 2022 Pirate Invitational, as they face Villanova at 10 a.m. and East Carolina at 3 p.m.
