Elon Defeats Gardner-Webb 5-2 On Saturday Afternoon

Box Score

ELON, N.C. – Gardner-Webb was unable to put together back-to-back wins after falling at Elon on Saturday afternoon.

"We enjoyed today, even though we came up a little short," said Head Coach Mike Griffith. "Elon is a very good team and deserved the win today."

Elon's top doubles team got a 6-2 win over Victor Putter and Chrisjan Van Wyk and had their #3 pair defeat Numa Lemieux-Monette and Eduardo Dias 6-4 to clinch the doubles point. The match on court 2 went unfinished as GWU's Sebastian Harris and Connor Enslin were leading 5-2.

The Runnin' Bulldogs' Alex Lepine won the opening decision from court 5 due to the Elon player being forced to retire. Lepine won the first set 7-6(3) and was leading 2-0 in the second. The Phoenix won on courts 3 and 6 in straight sets to get a point away from winning the overall match.

After losing in the first set to Dias, Elon's Kyle Frankel won the following two 6-0, 6-3 to clinch the team's win. This is their fourth consecutive win, all coming against Big South opponents.

Harris finished strong in his match at position 5 winning 7-6 (9), 6-1. The day ended with Putter dropping his decision on 2. Elon's Nicholas Campbell won this matchup 6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-2.

"I'm porud of Alex getting another win and Eduardo moved up to 1 and almost came away with a very good win in the top spot," said Griffith. "We now have three big matches next week and this weekend helps."

Gardner-Webb's next match is Monday, February 28 at Hampton with a first serve at 1:30 p.m.
