BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Women's Tennis dropped a 6-1 decision against Western Carolina on Saturday, the 'Dogs first Division I opponent of the season.
Doubles action saw the Catamounts clinch the point by winning the first two matches. Jacy Smith and Julia Pezzuco defeated
Manon Delsol and
Elin Hellberg in the topflight 6-2. The point was clinched on the #3 court as
Katie Watts and
Emilia Roslund lost a 6-4 decision.
Teodora Ristic and
Maria Jardim got a win in the #2 position 7-6(2).
Western Carolina came away with commanding straight-set victories in the first four matches to be completed. The Catamounts' Smith defeated Jardim 6-1, 6-4 to clinch the team's victory.
Elise Semmartin's match on court #5 saw her lose a close battle to Antonella Benavides 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(5). Gardner-Webb's lone point of the day came from Hellberg's win in the #3 flight 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Gardner-Webb will face Kennesaw State next on Saturday, February 12 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
