CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb won both weekly awards from the Big South for MTEN. Eduardo Dias was named the Player of the Week and Alex Lepine received the Freshman of the Week award.
Both players had key roles on Friday in the 'Dogs 5-2 upset win over Presbyterian, the Big South Preseason Champions.
Dias' best performance of the week came on last Friday against Presbyterian. He prevailed in the topflight in singles by a 6-4, 6-3 decision over the conference's preseason player of the year, Max Benson. This was Benson's first straight-set loss to an unranked opponent this season. His win also marked the first point of the day for the 'Dogs as they went on to win the match 5-2. Dias also won his singles and doubles matches against Hampton, and his doubles match at S.C. State.
Up to this point in the season, Dias has collected a total of 13 victories including a 8-2 record in his past 10 singles matches.
Lepine started his week by clinching the doubles point against Hampton as well as clinching the overall match with his 6-4, 6-0 win on court #4. He dropped his singles match in three sets at S.C. State but bounced back in the team's Friday win hosting Presbyterian. He played in flight 5 and won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and clinched the team's victory with the decision.
After losing in two of his first three matches of the season, Lepine has stormed to a 9-1 record in his past ten.
This is the third time Lepine has been named the conference's freshman of the week (2/9, 2/16). This is the first time that Dias has earned a weekly award.
The last time that Gardner-Webb won both awards in the same week was March 17 of last year with Victor Putter taking POTW, and Chrisjan Van Wyk earning FOTW.
The Runnin' Bulldogs have their next match in Gaffney, S.C. playing Limestone twice with an initial start of 1:30 p.m.
