DETROIT –
RJ Mosley wrapped up competition at the 2022 Division I Wrestling Championships Thursday, fighting down to the wire in two tight matches inside Little Caesars Arena.
Mosley dropped a tough, 2-1 decision in overtime (TB-1) to No. 11 Izzak Olejnik from Northern Illinois in the first round Thursday afternoon and lost a 3-1 battle with No. 27 Bubba Wilson of Nebraska late Thursday evening on the sport's biggest collegiate stage.
Mosley, seeded No. 22 at 165 pounds, and Olejnik went toe-to-toe over three scoreless periods on Mat No. 8, and headed into an initial two-minute overtime period. Neither could get on the board during that stretch, sending the match to a pair of 30-second periods.
Olejnik began the first 30 seconds on top, and was able to close out the period with 30 seconds riding time in his favor.
Mosley started on top next, but Olejnik was able to escape for one point and secured a narrow decision.
The second session started at 7:00 pm and, after a long wait, Mosley and Wilson stepped onto to Mat 1 for their consolation match. Mosley scored the initial point on an escape in the second period, but Wilson was able to go in front with a late takedown as that period's time wound down.
Wilson added another point with an escape just four seconds into the final period and fended off Mosley's final barrage late to take the win.
Mosley finished his junior season with an 18-8 overall mark.
