March 19, 2022 | Women's Tennis
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Women's Tennis enters this weekend with seven matches remaining on the season, six of these are within conference play. The team has compiled a 4-6 record at this point in the year and is 2-0 within the Big South.
GWU opened the year with a 7-0-win hosting Limestone but dropped their next four against strong mid-major competition. The team's 4-3 win against Wofford ended the losing skid and propelled them onto a three-match win streak. The latter of the two wins came against Hampton and UNC Asheville from within the conference. The past two the Runnin' Bulldogs have dropped, each by a 4-3 scoreline.
Moving forward, the 'Dogs will play their remaining six Big South matches in a 15-day window. The action starts at Longwood on March 20 followed by Radford on March 22. The team's road slate ends with matches at Campbell on March 26 and Presbyterian on March 31. The Big South matches end in the opening weekend of April. GWU hosts North Carolina A&T on April 2 and Charleston Southern on the next day. The regular season ends for the team on April 5 with a road trip to UNC Greensboro.
This season, Gardner-Webb has won three of the weekly awards from the Big South. Elin Hellberg won Player of the Week on February 9. Teodora Ristic was POTW, and Emilia Roslund was FOTW on March 10 for a team sweep of the awards for this week. Roslund winning Freshman of the Week was the first time a GWU player has earned this since Ristic on January 29, 2020.
In doubles, GWU is 13-15 this season using the same three pairs in every match this year. For the #1 flight, they have used Manon Delsol and Maria Jardim and have collected three wins together. Jardim and Ristic are 6-3 this year with all matches coming from the #2 court. The #3 pair is 4-6 so far and features a pair of new players on the team, transfer Katie Watts and freshman Roslund.
Ristic has emerged as one of the top players on the team this year being the only person to play in the singles topflight and is 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big South. Delsol boosts another one of the top records on the team, with her 6-2 mark on the season from court 2.
Jardim and Hellberg have split time playing on the #3 and #4 courts. Jardim has become the primary player at 3 and is 2-4 on the season from there. Hellberg recently moved to play at 4 and is 3-2 from there.
For positions 5 and 6, the team has used all other four players looking to find success. Courtney Fyvie has gone 2-3 from #5 and Elise Semmartin has gotten one win from this court as well. Roslund is 3-2 from position #6 and is 2-0 within the Big South. Semmartin and Watts have each claimed a win from this flight during the season too.
"The girls have worked hard and have made significant progress since the first of January," said Head Coach Jim Corn. "Our goal is, and has been, to get a little better each day, and that's what happened."
Gardner-Webb will look to continue their success for the rest of the season looking to qualify for the Big South Conference Tournament. The event is from April 14-23 with the top six teams from the regular season competing. The first round will be held from campus sites between April 14-16 while the semifinals and finals will be contested at Marion Diehl Park in Charlotte, N.C. on April 22 and 23.
