#4 Gardner-Webb Set To Face #5 High Point In Quarterfinal Round Of 2022 Hercules Tires Big South Basketball Championships

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - #4 Gardner-Webb is set to face #5 High Point in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Hercules Tires Big South Women's Basketball Championship on Thursday at 2 p.m.
 
The game will stream live from Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina on ESPN+ (Mike Gleason, Ralph Patterson) and over the airwaves of RBSN + WGNC FM 101.1 / AM 1450 (Phil Constantino, Jim "Mojo" Morrison).
 
The matchup will be the 39th meeting between the two teams. High Point owns the series with 22 wins, as Gardner-Webb has 16. GWU has won the last two meetings (W2), as the most recent win was February 15, 2022 (Gardner-Webb 62, High Point 53) The Panthers are one of five teams in the league that the Runnin' Bulldogs have swept this season.  
 
Regular Season Standings: Gardner-Webb finished the season in a T-4 with High Point. The Runnin' Bulldogs were awarded the #4 seed heading into the Big South Conference Championships due to their sweep of the Panthers this season.

Playing in Big South Championships: GWU is 13-10 (.565) when playing in Big South Championships. Gardner-Webb has made three appearances in the championship game (08-09', 09'-10', 10'-11'), winning the championship game in 2011 (W, Liberty, 67-66). 
 
Postseason History vs #5 High Point: Gardner-Webb holds a record of 1-2 vs High Point in the postseason (L2). The Runnin' Bulldogs most recent postseason loss to the Panthers was a 75-58 loss to High Point in the semifinals of the 2021 Big South Conference Championships. The other years the two teams played were March 7, 2015 (Semi, L, 56-53) and March 14, 2009 (Semi, W, 78-76). 
 
Last Time Out: Gardner-Webb topped Winthrop on Saturday with a final score of 80-51, which marked its fifth sweep of a conference opponent this season. Ki'Ari Cain made some noise on the hardwood by setting new career highs in both points (21) and assists (10). 
 
Swiper Smith: First Team All-Conference Sophomore Alasia Smith finished the season ranked second in the conference in field-goal percentage (56.8), making 159 shots on the season. The native of Johnson City, Tenn. is ranked sixth in the Big South in scoring, averaging 14.6 points per game. At the conclusion of the regular season, Smith leads the Big South in steals averaging 2.8 per contest and is ranked 12th in the nation. The sophomore is seventh in the conference in blocks, averaging 1.0 per game this season. This season Smith has recorded 13 double-doubles. Smith earned POTW honors twice this season. 
 
Watching Williams: Second Team All-Conference Senior Jhessyka Williams finished conference play with 15.9 points per game and was fourth in rebounds grabbing an average of 8.4 per game. Williams ranks fifth in steals in the conference averaging 2.0 per contest. The Augusta, Ga. native is fifth in blocked shots averaging 1.2 per contest. This season, Williams has earned POTW honors a total of three times, two of those during conference play, while also recording 10 double-doubles throughout the season. 
 
The Sniper: Lauren Bevis led the team in three-pointers made this season, and ranks second in the Big South with her 72 makes this season, 2.7 per game. This season Bevis led the Big South at the free-throw line at 85.2% (75-for-88) and ranks 44th nationally. Bevis is third on the team in scoring as she averaged 13.8 points per contest this season. 
 
2020-21 Fourth-Place Finish: Looking back, Gardner-Webb finished the previous 2020-21 season with a fourth-place finish in the Big South, wrapping up their season with a 75-58 loss to High Point in the semifinals of the Big South Conference Championship.
