March 29, 2022 | Men's Golf
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Gardner-Webb senior Zack Byers and the Runnin' Bulldogs took a four-stroke lead after the second round of action Tuesday at the 2022 GolfWeek Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (288-290-578) moved past Jacksonville State and North Dakota State into the lead heading into Wednesday's final 18 holes.
Charleston Southern (292-290-582) sits four shots behind in second place, with Jacksonville State, North Dakota State and Ohio rounding out the top-5 in the nine-team event.
Byers (Shelby, N.C. / Shelby HS) continued his red-hot spring, moving up one spot into first place after 36 holes. The senior standout shot back-to-back rounds of 69 over the first two days and holds a three shot lead over Ohio golfer Zach Mandry and Jacksonville State golfer Erik Jansson.
Byers recorded six birdies on Tuesday – three on the front nine and three on the back – to surge in front. He sat in second place after his strong opening round on Monday and has 11 birdies so far in the tournament.
Over his last two events, Byers has four consecutive rounds under par and three rounds in a row under 70. He is shooting 11-under par combined over his last five rounds of golf.
Byers was far from the only bright spot for head coach Tee Burton's team, as Max White finished Tuesday's second round in 10th position (70-75-145) and Miles Albright (74-73-147) pulled into a tie for 13th. Peech Bunnadodee (75-76-151) and Jules Bondil (81-73-154) are also keeping pace for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb is one of three Big South Conference teams competing in the tournament. The final 18 holes will begin on Wednesday.
