Byers Finishes On Top, Gardner-Webb Takes Second Place At AGT Intercollegiate

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Zack Byers fired a final round of 68 on Wednesday to finish atop the leaderboard and sparked Gardner-Webb to a second-place finish at the 2022 GolfWeek Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate.

Byers (Shelby, N.C. / Shelby HS) won his second tournament title in a row, finishing in a tie with Marshall golfer Tyler Jones, who carded a 62 on Wednesday to pull even at the top.

Gardner-Webb shot its best round of the tournament as a team (286) on Wednesday, falling just one stroke short of the team title. Charleston Southern shot a 281 – nine shots better than Tuesday's round for the Bucs – to finish at 863 for the tournament.

Byers averaged 4.47 strokes on Par 5 holes to lead the field (minus-8) and averaged 2.87 strokes on Par 3 holes to finish atop that statistical category (minus-2). The senior standout sank 16 birdie putts over 54 holes, ranking second among all golfers at the event.

On Wednesday, Byers shot a 33 on the front nine on the strength of birdies on the first, fourth, seventh and eighth holes. He shot even par on the back nine and finished with five birdies on the day. It was his fifth-straight round under par this season and his fourth in a row under 70. Byers is shooting 15-under par over his last six rounds of golf.

Gardner-Webb needed big efforts from other team members on Wednesday and got strong finishes from Miles Albright and Max White. Albright fired a 69 over his final round, using six birdies over the final 12 holes to pull into a tie for eighth by the end of the day.

White (70-75-74-219) was three strokes back in 13th place, with Peech Bunnadodee (75-76-75-226) and Jules Bondil (81-73-78-232) rounding out the Gardner-Webb group.

Gardner-Webb finished seven shots in front of North Dakota State.

The tournament was played this week on the 6,978-yard (Par 72) True Blue Course.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will play in the Wofford Intercollegiate on April 11 and April 12, before hosting the 2022 Big South Conference Championships on April 20-23 in Ninety Six, S.C.
