AIKEN, S.C. – Senior
Zack Byers finished in third place individually, leading Gardner-Webb's effort at the 2022 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
The tournament was played at the fabulous 6,617-yard Palmetto Golf Club (Par 70), which was established in 1892.
Byers (Shelby, N.C.) held steady on Tuesday despite a more challenging course setup, carding a 71 to finish 1-under par for the tournament. Byers shot back-to-back rounds of 69 on Monday's opening day to spark a tremendous start. He had eight birdies over the 54-hole event, including four on Tuesday. He also had an eagle on Monday, shooting a two on the 458-yard (Par 4) fifth hole.
Byers birdied the seventh hole twice in three rounds and had six of his eight birdies on the front nine.
Gardner-Webb 11th in the team standings (291-293-294-878), with Byers followed by
Jules Bondil (72-74-76-222),
Peech Bunnadodee (75-74-74-223),
Miles Albright (75-76-74-225) and
Max White (80-81-75-236).
The 'Dogs nipped Big South foe High Point by three strokes and were just one stroke outside the top-10.
South Carolina won the team title, shooting an 832 for the event. Virginia was 10 strokes back in second, with VCU 20 strokes behind in third. Host USC Aiken took fourth.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on March 21-22 at the ECU Pirate Intercollegiate In Greenville, N.C.
