Gardner-Webb Finishes Second Saturday In 2022 Big South Men's Golf Match Play

NINETY SIX, S.C. – Gardner-Webb stormed through the semifinals of match play at the 2022 Big South Men's Golf Championship Saturday and finished second to Charleston Southern in the finals.
The Runnin' Bulldogs dropped a 3-0 decision in the finals to the top-seeded Buccaneers and posted their highest finish at the tournament since finishing second in 2019.
Zack Byers led early on in in the first match, pushing out in front by three strokes after 10 holes. Charleston Southern's Caleb Loudin pulled even at the 14th and eventually won the match. The Buccaneers also picked up wins in the third and fifth matches to clinch the title.
Ethan Willis topped Peech Bunnadodee in the third match 4&3 and Alan Smith took a 5&4 win over Jules Bondil in the fifth match. Charleston Southern also led in the fourth match, with Gardner-Webb's Miles Albright holding a 2UP lead in the second match.
The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped out early in Saturday's semifinal over No. 3 Campbell and never looked back.
Byers won the opening match 3&1, Albright won 4&3 in the second match and Max White clinched the win for Gardner-Webb with a 2&1 victory. Bunnadodee and Bondil also had leads for Gardner-Webb when the win was sealed.
Byers, who won medalist honors on Friday, will advance individually to the 2022 NCAA Men's Golf regionals, with the field to be announced in two weeks. He is Gardner-Webb's first NCAA Division I qualifier in golf.
