CHARLOTTE – Charleston Southern defeated Gardner-Webb in the championship match of the Women's Tennis Big South Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The final score for the match was 4-0, ending the season for the Runnin' Bulldogs. This is the Buccaneers' second consecutive Big South Championship.
The Buccaneers won the opening doubles point behind their wins on courts 1 and 3, with the clinch coming at 3. The score at position 1 was 6-1, and at 3 was 6-3. The Bucs were winning 4-3 on court 2 as well when it was called.
In singles, the first match to conclude was at 4. Noa Boyd defeated
Elin Hellberg 6-0, 6-2 for the Bucs' second point of the day. This was followed quickly by Laura Marti winning 6-1, 6-2 from position 3, for their third point.
The match was clinched by Madelina Man on court 2. She won the opening set 6-1 and was leading 5-2 in the second before
Manon Delsol rallied four-game wins in a row to lead 6-5. Man battled back to win the set in a tiebreaker, securing the team the conference title.
Teodora Ristic's match went unfinished with the score at 4-6, 6-0, 3-4 in the topflight. The #5 match was unable to be completed as well, but
Elise Semmartin's score was at 4-6, 3-2.
Emilia Roslund was able to win the first set in her match, but the match was called with her trailing 5-2 in the second set.
Gardner-Webb finishes the season with a 9-9 record on the year. The runner-up finish in the conference tournament is the best in school history.
