April 26, 2022 | Men's Golf
CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb's Zack Byers earned All-Big South Conference Men's Golf honors, and Peech Bunnadodee was named to the All-Academic Team, the league announced this week.
A senior from Shelby, N.C., Byers was voted to the conference's first team for the first time in his career after winning a three-hole playoff to claim medalist honors at the 2022 Big South Men's Golf Championship this past weekend.
He became the first golfer in Gardner-Webb's NCAA Division I era – dating back to 2001 – to win an individual title and qualify for the NCAA regionals, solidifying a spot on the Big South all-championship team in the process as a top five finisher in the league tournament.
Byers dominated play for Gardner-Webb this season as the fourth-year standout registered a trio of tournament victories and four top-10 finishes overall, tied for the second most of any golfer in the Big South this season. He was the only golfer in the conference to complete a tournament double-digits under par (-10), and rounded out the year with the second lowest stroke average of all Big South competitors. He was named Big South Men's Golfer of the Week three separate times, all of which came during the most recent spring season.
Byers proved to be a consistent force for Gardner-Webb, firing the lowest round of any GWU player in all five tournaments this spring, as well as nine of 10 tournaments overall this season (including twice tying with a teammate for the lowest finish). He boosted the Runnin' Bulldogs to five top-10 team finishes overall and three top-3 results in the final four tournaments, including a second-place in the Big South Championship this past weekend.
As for Bunnadodee, the junior earned postseason accolades of his own by ranking third on the Runnin' Bulldogs' squad with a 75.66 stroke average this season. A native of Bangkok, Thailand, Bunnadodee has continued to excel in the classroom as well as he carries a strong 3.70 cumulative GPA as an international business major at Gardner-Webb.
