BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Men's Tennis lost their final nonconference match of the 2022 season by a 4-3 score to UNC Wilmington on Sunday.
"Today was a great college tennis match and had an awesome atmosphere," said Head Coach
Mike Griffith. "We played with a lot of heart and passion and came up a tad short today."
The Seahawks clinched the doubles point with 6-3 decisions on courts 1 and 3, with the result on 3 being the decisive one.
In singles, Gardner-Webb claimed the first two matches to be completed, each in straight sets.
Connor Enslin won 6-2, 7-5 at position #6 followed by
Eduardo Dias winning 7-5, 6-2 in the topflight.
UNCW responded to their results by winning a pair of their own, pushing the score to 3-2. These came from the decisions at flights 3 and 5.
After dropping the first set on court 2,
Victor Putter won the remaining two 6-1, 6-1 to tie the overall match at 3. The team victory came down to the result on court 4. Gabe Hurtado prevailed in it, defeating
Sebastian Harris 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 for the Seahawks' tenth win of the year.
For the Runnin' Bulldogs, they have one match left this season. They will face UNC Asheville (3-3) on Wednesday, April 6 at 2:30 p.m. If GWU wins, they will secure a top-three seed in the Big South Tournament, with first-round matches scheduled for April 14-16.
