Gardner-Webb Overcomes 3-1 Deficit to Defeat UNC Asheville in Regular Season Finale

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Men's Tennis finished their season with a 4-3 win at UNC Asheville on Wednesday to finish 5-2 in the Big South. The 'Dogs overcame a 3-1 deficit by winning the final three singles matches of the day to get the lead.
"We found a way to pull the match out, after being down," said Head Coach Mike Griffith. "I think we were fortunate to win, but to win championships, good teams find a way."
Asheville won the opening doubles match 6-1 in the topflight, but GWU's Chrisjan Van Wyk and Victor Putter responded with a 6-4 win on the #2 court. The point came down to a tiebreaker at position 3 where Gardner-Webb's Numa Lemieux-Monette and Eduardo Dias won 7-6 (3).
In singles, Asheville stormed out to winning three straight-set matches to go ahead 3-1 in the overall score. They won on courts 5, 2, and 6, in that order.
Sebastian Harris won his match on court 4, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Van Wyk was the next to finish, prevailing 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, tying the overall score at 3, making it come down to the topflight. Dias was able to clinch the 'Dogs fifth conference win of the year, needing a tiebreaker in the third set to seal the win.
Gardner-Webb now finished the regular season 12-10, with a 5-2 record in conference matches. The Runnin' Bulldogs qualified for the Big South Tournament with first-round games scheduled for April 14-16.
