BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Women's Soccer matched up with Jacksonville State on Thursday afternoon with the Runnin' Bulldogs coming out with a 2-1 decision for their third win of the year. Transfers
Autumn Woodard and
Julianna Jatkola each tallied their first scores with Gardner-Webb, both scoring in the second half.
"This was one of those games to get chances early and score," said Head Coach
Mike Varga. "We wanted to see the ball in the back of the net earlier in the match, but we were able to keep the pressure up in the second half to get the necessary goals for today's decision."
In the first half, Gardner-Webb came out strong creating two chances off corner kicks with
Carina Leal taking both. Also, in the 28
th minute, Leal took a shot from 30 yards out, getting past the goalkeeper and banging it off the crossbar, but was unable to find the back of the net.
In the second half, Woodard tallied the first goal for either side just four minutes into the restart.
Maddie Turlington sent a pass to Drayton to knock the ball into the back of the net, giving GWU the separation needed to claim the win.
In the 75
th minute, Leal sent a cross in off a corner, finding
Abby Clark in the box who passed it to Jatkola in front of the goal to tap it in for the Runnin' Bulldogs' second of the afternoon.
The Gamecocks responded quickly to the two-goal deficit, turning up the pressure to tally their first of the day from Laleh Lonteen. Jacksonville State guided six shots on goal in the second half, but the five saves from Leffler during the period kept GWU in front.
Jacksonville State outshot Gardner-Webb 17-10 during the matchup. JSU's Bailey Dean collected three saves while GWU's Leffler ended with seven, a new single-game high for the freshman from New Bern.
"Today, we were down a couple of players and the girls that had to step in, did, and that was a byproduct of the depth and intense training from over the offseason," said Varga. "I'm excited to see how Julianna and Autumn go into the next couple of matches after gaining some confidence scoring their first goals of the season today."
Gardner-Webb returns to Greene-Harbison Stadium on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. to host Wofford in the second game of seven-in-a-row at home.
