Woodard Scores Twice As Gardner-Webb Earns 3-3 Draw With Charlotte Sunday Night

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb and Charlotte combined for four second-half goals, but neither team was able to convert on a game winner as the Runnin' Bulldogs and 49ers finished in a 3-3 draw Sunday night from Greene-Harbison Stadium.

After taking a 1-1 tie into halftime, Gardner-Webb (3-3-2) scored two goals in 28 seconds, but the Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to hold off a late Charlotte (1-4-2) push as the 49ers answered with a pair of goals of their own to even the match at 3-3 in the 78th minute, the eventual final score.

"We put three in tonight against a good team," said head coach Mike Varga. "We're disappointed that we didn't get the win, but it speaks highly of our team's expectations. Even though we came away with a tie, it can build our confidence as we get ready for conference play in a couple of weeks.

Autumn Woodard scored each of the first two goals of the night for Gardner-Webb, the first coming in the 24th minute and the second in the 70th. Maddie Turlington also scored for the Runnin' Bulldogs, converting on a penalty kick in the 71st minute less than 30 seconds following Woodard's second goal.

"I've been challenging Autumn to be threatening in front of the goal, and she played with that mentality tonight," said Varga. "For Maddie, it was another solid game by her. She'll take a lot of contact, but her hard work pays off and she delivered with the third goal of the night after drawing the PK and finishing the opportunity."

CLT outshot Gardner-Webb 23-13 on the night, with GWU goalkeeper Chloe Leffler making nine saves on 12 shots on target. The 49ers also held the edge in corner kicks, 5-2.

"Chloe had another solid performance tonight and is growing in confidence in goal," continued Varga. "She is playing for us, and we need that. Our young players are gaining a ton of experience, and defensive we played pretty well, so there are a lot of positives to take away from the result despite the three goals allowed."

Gardner-Webb will continue its seven-match homestand when it welcomes Allen (S.C.) to Boiling Springs this Friday, September 16. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. from Greene-Harbison Stadium.
