FARMVILLE, Va. – Gardner-Webb (7-4-2; 2-1-0) defeated Longwood (3-6-3; 0-2-1) by a score of 2-0 in its third Big South Conference matchup of the season on Wednesday night in Farmville, Va.
Maddie Turlington, the NCAA leader in both goals and points, added to her historic season with two goals tonight bringing her total to 15 on the year.
After Wednesday's performance, Turlington moved into a tie for 4
th all time for career goals scored at Gardner-Webb with 37.
The Runnin' Bulldogs took an early advantage when Turlington put one away in the 13
th minute after a corner kick from
Carina Leal and a few blocked attempts. Turlington sent another rocket past the goalkeeper just before the half to stretch Gardner-Webb's lead to two.
"The team followed the game plan to a tee," said head coach
Mike Varga. "I am so proud of this group and the collective effort they give. To come into what has been a tough venue for us and get three points is huge."
Goalkeeper
Chloe Leffler put up another stellar performance in goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs. She posted three saves on her way to her second shutout of the year. Her record improved to 6-2-0 with the victory.
Turlington led the offense with eight shots followed by
Autumn Woodard's two.
Klara Ovefelt and
Julianna Jatkola took one shot each.
"I thought our team defending was very good," said Varga. "Hopefully we can get some good support back home on Saturday."
Gardner-Webb return to Boiling Springs to face Campbell on Saturday, October 1. The match is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
