BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb women's basketball returns home on Wednesday night for another important Big South Conference test, hosting Presbyterian at 7 pm in Paul Porter Arena.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (12-4, 4-0 Big South) remain in sole possession of first place, a half game in front of USC Upstate and a full game in front of the Blue Hose (7-8, 3-1) and Campbell.
Gardner-Webb is paced by an outstanding starting lineup, with four of those women currently averaging in double figures scoring.
All-America candidate
Jhessyka Williams leads the way with a Big South-leading 18.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Williams also leads the Big South with 10 double-doubles and has scored at least 19 points in each of the last eight games.
The Augusta, Ga., native is the league's active career leader with 1,678 points and 825 rebounds and is just the seventh woman in Big South history to top 1,500 points and 800 rebounds.
In Saturday's road win at Radford, Williams scored 16 of her team-high 20 points in the second half to rally the Runnin' Bulldogs. She has been named Big South Player of the Week a league-high four times already this season.
Preseason Big South Player of the Year
Alasia Smith is next with 13.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game – and ranks second behind Williams in the league with seven double-doubles. Smith had two of those double-doubles in last week's wins over Campbell and Radford.
Guards
Lauren Bevis (12.6 ppg) and
Ki'Ari Cain (10.4 ppg, 4.4 apg) have made the big shots of late, with Bevis hitting the game winner in the closing seconds vs. Campbell and Cain knocking down the game winner with five seconds left at Radford. Cain, who is averaging a career-high in scoring this season, also paces the Big South in assists.
Presbyterian has high hopes as well this season and is one of the Big South's most effective defensive teams – allowing only 63.0 points per game.
Bryanna Brady (12.9 ppg), Mara Neira (10.3 ppg) and Tilda Sjokvist (8.8 ppg) lead the Blue Hose in scoring this season, with Brady also pulling down a team-high 6.8 boards per game.
The two teams split last season's meetings, with each winning on its home court.
Wednesday game will stream live on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com).
