Gardner-Webb Women Look To Defend Home Court Wednesday Night vs. Longwood

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb women's basketball hosts Longwood on Wednesday night in Big South Conference action, with the tip set for 7:00 pm.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (15-4, 6-0 Big South) are off to the best start in conference play in program history and are undefeated this season in Paul Porter Arena – sporting a 7-0 mark.

Gardner-Webb continues to rely on its starting five for scoring – and rebounding – punch. Jhessyka Williams, who has emerged as a legitimate All-America candidate on the wing, averages a league-high 19.1 points and 10.3 rebounds per game this season. She ranks among the national leaders in total rebounds and points scored and is coming off one of the most electric weeks in program history.

Williams notched Gardner-Webb's first triple-double last Wednesday vs. Presbyterian and nearly repeated the feat on Saturday at UNC Asheville. She has been named league Player of the Week five times.

Over her last five games, Williams is pouring in 20.4 points to go with 11.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game – and is shooting a crisp 51.9 percent from the floor.

Running mate Alasia Smith has been strong of late as well, averaging 13.5 points, 8.9 rebounds and 3.8 steals per game. Smith leads the nation in total steals through 18 games and is averaging a double-double (13.6 ppg / 11.2 rpg) over her last five starts.

Lauren Bevis (13.0 ppg) and Ki'Ari Cain (10.6 ppg, 4.4 apg) form one of the league's best combinations in the backcourt and post player Layken Cox (7.1 ppg) has been the beneficiary of an open painted area to score around the rim.

Micahla Funderburk got into the action on Saturday, netting 10 points in Gardner-Webb's win at UNCA.

Longwood, the defending Big South champs, are 3-14 overall and 2-4 in league play early on. Guards Anne-Hamilton LeRoy (12.3 ppg) and Adriana Shipp-Davis (12.1 ppg) lead the way for the Lancers.

Wednesday's game will stream live on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com) and will also air live ESPNCLT.com (audio).
