BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb women's basketball hosts Campbell Wednesday night at 7:00 pm in a first-place battle inside Paul Porter Arena.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (10-4, 2-0 Big South) have won four of their last five games, including a win over co-favorite High Point on Saturday afternoon. Campbell (7-6, 2-0) is coming off wins over Presbyterian and defending Big South champ Longwood.
Gardner-Webb is led by All-America candidate
Jhessyka Williams, who leads the Big South in both scoring (18.8) and rebounding (10.3) and is the Big South's active leader with 1,639 career points and 808 rebounds.
The Augusta, Ga., senior has been on fire of late – earning Big South Player of the Week honors on Monday once again – and leads the league with six games of 20 points or more. She also leads the Big South with nine double-doubles.
Williams scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half of Saturday's win over High Point. Over the last five games, she is pouring in an average of 22.8 points, 12.6 rebounds, 2.4 assist and 2.0 steals per game.
Alasia Smith, the Big South's Preseason Player of the Year, battled early foul trouble Saturday vs. High Point, but still managed to clean the glass for 18 rebounds in the win. She is averaging 9.8 points and 11.2 boards per game over the last five.
Lauren Bevis (11.8 ppg) and
Ki'Ari Cain (10.8 ppg) are also scoring at an efficient clip over the last five, with Cain dishing off 5.4 assists per game to make the offense go fast.
Wednesday night's game will feature a contrast in styles and strengths. Gardner-Webb paces the Big South in team scoring with 74.0 points per game and Campbell leads the league – and ranks No. 5 nationally – in team defense (51.7 ppg).
Gardner-Webb's defense is also a strength, with 10.1 steals per game helping fuel a transition game that adds to its scoring punch – and has produced a 5.43 edge in turnover margin through 14 games.
When GWU does miss, the Runnin' Bulldogs attack the offensive glass with great success, pulling down a league-high 15.6 offensive rebounds per game.
Campbell's leading scorer – All-Big South choice Shy Tuelle – has played in only seven games this season (13.0 ppg), with Gianni Boone also scoring in double figures at 10.3 ppg. Christabel Ezumah (8.5 ppg) and Brittany Staves (8.5 ppg) also score well for the Camels, who average 60.8 points per game as a team.
Campbell is particularly good at defending the arc, allowing only 48 made threes this season – a contrast to the Camels' 95 made from beyond that distance (7.3 per game).
