BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Gardner-Webb dropped a 32-6 dual to No. 19 Appalachian State in Southern Conference wrestling action Monday night in Paul Porter Arena.
Zach Price (141) and
Jha'Quan Anderson (184) picked up wins for the Runnin' Bulldogs (4-8, 2-2 SoCon).
The Mountaineers (8-4, 2-2 SoCon) picked up a major decision at 125 pounds to start, with No. 11 Caleb Smith taking a 16-4 victory. After an 8-3 decision at 133 pounds for Appalachian State, Price rallied the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 3-2 decision, but the Mountaineers picked up six team points at 149 pounds by forfeit to take a 13-3 lead.
No. 28 Tommy Askey picked up five team points for Appalachian State at 157 pounds with a 23-7 tech fall, leading up the match of the day between nationally-ranked wrestlers at 165 pounds.
Gardner-Webb standout R.J. Mosley, ranked No. 24 nationally, took the lead in the second period with an escape, but No. 26 Will Formato held a slight edge in riding time heading into the third. Formato escaped with his riding time edge still intact early in the third and was able to fend off Mosley down the stretch to win 2-1 by virtue of that riding time edge (1:03).
The Mountaineers picked up a tech fall at 174 pounds to push the lead to 26-3 before Anderson's takedown in overtime gave him a 3-1 win at 184 pounds. Appalachian State picked up wins in the final two weight classes to close out the match.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action at home Friday night, hosting VMI at 7:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena (ESPN+).
