RADFORD, Va. –
Jhessyka Williams scored 20 points and
Alasia Smith netted another double-double to lead Gardner-Webb to a 74-70 win at Radford Saturday.
Williams scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half – including 10 in the fourth quarter to help the Runnin' Bulldogs (12-4, 4-0 Big South) remain undefeated and in first place in the Big South.
Smith netted 15 points and pulled down 11 boards – eight on the offensive glass – in an efficient performance. The Johnson City, Tenn., junior made 6-of-10 shots and had six steals despite foul trouble.
Lauren Bevis scored 13 points,
Layken Cox added nine and
Ki'Ari Cain scored seven in the win. Cain added five assists.
Gardner-Webb led by as many as 11 in the first quarter and held a 39-31 lead at halftime. Radford (5-10, 1-3 Big South) steadily chipped away at that lead in the third quarter – eventually trimming it all the way to two points heading into the fourth.
The Highlanders tied the game with 9:38 to play and took its first lead on a Vanessa Blake layup with 9:14 to go. The lead moved to 56-51 on a pair of Rachel LaLonde free throws with 8:00 to play, before Bevis drained another trey to cut it back to a pair.
Cain tied the game with a jumper with 6:57 to go, but Radford pushed back in front with two more free throws from Blake. The two teams went back and forth over the next six minutes, until Williams came through with a pair of free throws with 52.7 seconds left to give Gardner-Webb a 70-69 lead.
After Ashlyn Traylor made a single free throw to tie the game with 31.2 seconds to go, Gardner-Webb took over with a chance to win the game.
Cain took the shot, draining a jumper with 5.3 seconds left to put the 'Dogs up 72-70. Radford turned the basketball over with 3.5 seconds left and Bevis made a pair of free throws to ice the win.
Gardner-Webb shot the basketball effectively, making 29-of-59 for a 49.2 percentage from the floor, but had to overcome 21 turnovers and a tough day at the free throw line.
Radford put five women in double figures, led by Lalonde and Traylor with 14 apiece, and made a robust 20-of-26 free throws to overcome its own 22 turnovers.
Both teams shot well in the final quarter, with Gardner-Webb making 9-of-16 baskets (56.3 percent) and Radford going 6-of-10 (60.0 percent).
