CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb's
Jhessyka Williams led the Runnin' Bulldogs to a pair of wins last week and was named Big South Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week on Monday.
Williams (Augusta, Ga.) averaged 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 assists per game in wins over Campbell and Radford – helping Gardner-Webb (12-4, 4-0 Big South) extend its hold on first place in the Big South standings.
In Wednesday's 61-59 win over Campbell in Paul Porter Arena, Williams netted 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season.
In Saturday's 74-70 road win over Radford, Williams saved her best for the final 30 minutes.
With Gardner-Webb falling behind in a back-and-forth second half, Williams scored 16 of her 20 points to keep her team from fading. Williams had 10 of her points in the fourth quarter to record her seventh 20-point game of the season. She has 10 games with at least 19 points under her belt this season, including eight in a row dating back to December 4.
Williams is averaging a league-best 18.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game through 16 starts for Coach
Alex Simmons. She sits fourth in school history with 1,678 career points – which ranks first in the program's Division I era. Williams has 825 career rebounds and is on pace for a new career-high average this season.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Wednesday night at home, hosting Presbyterian at 7:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena (ESPN+).
