BOONE, N.C. – Three Gardner-Webb wrestlers recorded third-place finishes in their respective weight classes at the App State Open on Saturday, Nov. 11.
 
Joey Giordano, Brixan Burgess, and Edison Flores all finished third in their brackets, while Jackson Lusk and Charlie Sly picked up a pair of fourth-place finishes.
 
After dropping his first match of the day at 149 pounds by fall to Wil Guida of North Carolina, Giordano won his next three matches, picking up two straight wins by major decision over Matthew McLaughlin of Davidson (11-1) and Luca Errico of Virginia (18-4). Giordano took the third-place match with a 10-8 victory over Junior Downing of Lander.
 
Burgess took home third-place at 174 pounds. Burgess dropped his opening match via 15-0 tech fall to Brandon Matthews of Lander, but earned his third-place medal defeating Luke Gregory of Greensboro College by fall in 1:04.
 
Wrestling at 197 pounds, Flores dropped his opening bout to Anthony Yaccovetti of Lander by fall in 5:27, and then fell 6-3 to Gunnar Poole of Appalachian State in the second round. Flores needed just 1:43 to pick up the fall victory over Amarion Wilson of Greensboro College in his final match, earning a third-place finish.
 
Lusk competed at 157 pounds in Boone, falling to Jack Tangen of Lander by tech fall 18-3 in his first round match. Lusk defeated teammate Hunter Jones by fall in 1:45 to reach the third-place match, but ultimately fell by fall in 0:38 to Colin Nugent of North Carolina.
 
Competing at 133 pounds, Sly dropped a 9-5 decision to Evan Buchanan of Virginia, but rebounded nicely with a 6-2 win over Max Martin of North Carolina and a 10-3 victory over Michael Campanaro of Council Rock North. Sly fell in the third-place bout to John Hager by fall in 3:56.
 
Eleven total wrestlers from Gardner-Webb competed at the App State Open.
 
Gardner-Webb closes out the month of November next week at the Black Knight Invite at Army West Point on Sunday, Nov. 19. Competition is set to begin at 10:00 A.M.
