SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb improved to 4-2 on the year after a 5-2 decision over Wofford in Spartanburg. With the win, the Runnin' Bulldogs have won their past four.
"It was a big battle for the doubles point, and we were fortunate to win that one," said Head Coach
Mike Griffith. "It is always a battle when we play Wofford and are excited to keep moving forward with more huge tests in the coming days."
In doubles, the Runnin' Bulldogs got the first match to conclude on a 7-5 decision with
Numa Lemieux-Monette and Vicot Putter in flight #2. The 'Dogs dropped the match on court #3 on a 7-5 scoreline. The point came down to topflight where
Chrisjan Van Wyk and
Eduardo Dias won 7-5.
Everything in singles was finished in straight sets with GWU getting the victory in four of them. The Terries claimed the first to conclude on court #5. The Runnin' Bulldogs went on to win the next four matches to get the team win.
On court #4, Lemieux-Monette had his end 6-4, 6-4 followed by
Alex Lepine winning 6-4, 6-2 from position #2. Dias clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 decision in the topflight.
Kim Neithammar rounded out the teams wins 6-4, 6-3 from flight #6. The day ended with Wofford winning on court #3.
Gardner-Webb will play their next seven matches at home over 13 days. The stretch will kick off with GWU hosting North Georgia on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. The Nighthawks currently rank as the #11 team in the NCAA D2 ranks and will be the second team GWU has played within the D2 Top 20. The first they played was #18 Wingate on February 9 with the 'Dogs winning 5-2.
