
Record Swim In Men's 200 Medley Relay Headlines First Day Of CCSA Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Gardner-Webb men's swimming 200 medley relay team swam a school-record time of 1:27.17 Wednesday to take second at the 2023 CCSA Championships.
The team of Brady Fields, Justin Bender, John Cass and Logan Cornelison lowered the previous school record set last season at the CCSA meet.
Fields also finished second himself in the 50 free finals with a personal-record time of 19.92 – just off the pace of the Gardner-Webb school record of 19.49 set in 2016 by Nathan Lile.
The Runnin' Bulldog men sat in third after the first day's action. Numerous personal and season bests powered the effort by both Gardner-Webb teams. The GWU women finished Wednesday in ninth position – just off the pace of Georgia Southern.
On the men's side, Theo Drescher finished fifth in the 500 free with a season-best time of 4:33.53 and Justin Bender was sixth in the 200 yard IM finals with a personal-record time of 1:48.56.
In addition to Field's fast race in the 50 free, Cornelison finished seventh in teh finals with a PR of 20.51 seconds.
Garrett Despres, Sam Goldey, Sam Ospina and Hayden Carpenter swam in the 500 free 'B' finals and Griffin Egolf swam in the 200 IM 'B' finals to provide team points for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Zuri Ramsey scored points in 50 free 'B' finals for Gardner-Webb.
The Gardner-Webb women's 200 medley relay team also posted a season-best time on Wednesday. The team of Kayla Smith, Alexandra Haaser, Paris Binard and Alyssa Church swam the race in 1:44.21, which ranks among the top-15 times in a deep program history.
The GWU women also scored team points with several solid finishes in the 'C' finals, with Ellie Eckert, Hailey Williams, Emma Maust and Sara-Michael Jann swimming in the 500 free. Smith and Church each scored points in the 50 free 'C' finals on Wednesday.
The meet continues on Thursday, with prelims set for a 10:00 am (Big South Network) and finals set for 6:00 pm (ESPN+).
