BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Big South Conference regular season champion Gardner-Webb women's basketball will host its regular season finale vs. USC Upstate on Saturday at 2:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (25-4, 17-0 Big South) will look to close out a perfect conference slate against the Spartans and will recognize a seven-woman senior class prior to tip. Fans are encouraged to come early to honor seniors Lauren Bevin,
Ki'Ari Cain,
Christina Deng,
Grace Knutsen,
L'Mia Littlejohn,
Sarah Matthews and
Jhessyka Williams.
Fans and supporters are also asked to stay late – as Gardner-Webb will celebrate its regular season title with a trophy presentation and net cutting ceremony following the conclusion of Saturday's game.
Head coach
Alex Simmons' team continues to shine, averaging 78.2 points per game in league play and leading the league with a 17.1 points per game scoring margin.
The quartet of Williams (18.5 ppg), Bevis (15.2 ppg), junior
Alasia Smith (14.1 ppg) and Cain (10.2 ppg) has been effective throughout the season, with sophomore post
Layken Cox (7.9 ppg) coming into her own down low.
Cain leads the league in assists, Smith leads the league – and country – in steals and Williams paces the conference in both scoring and rebounding. Bevis – the top marksman from long range in Gardner-Webb's Division I era – has been sharp from distance of late.
This year's team features the first trio of 1,000-point scorers – Williams, Bevis, Smith – to play on the same team in Gardner-Webb history. Williams, who has scored 1,912 career points, is within striking distance of becoming just the third woman in GWU history to reach the 2,000-point mark.
Tickets for Saturday's game are available online at GWUSports.com, with adult tickets priced at $10 and non-GWU students priced at $5.
The game will also stream live on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com) with Phil Constantino calling the action – with the radio call streaming on ESPNCLT.com.
