BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb women's basketball brings a 12-game win streak into Wednesday's Big South showdown with Radford, with tip set for 7 pm in Paul Porter Arena.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (20-4, 12-0 Big South) hold a full four-game lead on first place with six games remaining. GWU rallied for a 74-70 win at Radford on January 7 after a late jumper to take the lead from
Ki'Ari Cain.
Coach
Alex Simmons has her team at the 20-win mark for the first time since taking over the program in 2018-2019. In addition to the 12-game win streak overall, GWU has won 15 in a row inside Paul Porter Arena (10-0 this season).
Simmons is 81-58 during her five seasons as head coach and has led the 'Dogs to a 58-27 mark in league play during that same stretch.
GWU has sizzled on the offensive end of late, topping 80 points in each of its last six games and posting 76.7 points per game on the season.
Jhessyka Williams (18.3 ppg / 10.0 rpg) continues to lead the way, with
Lauren Bevis (14.9 ppg),
Alasia Smith (13.8 ppg, 8.9 rpg) and
Ki'Ari Cain (10.5 ppg) also averaging in double digits.
Smith is the nation's best in steals, taking away 93 already this season and leading a GWU defense that forces 22.3 turnovers per game (10.1 steals per game).
Williams (scoring, rebounding), Cain (assists), Bevis (free throw percentage, three-pointers made/percentage) and Smith (steals) lead the Big South individually in at least one category.
Gardner-Webb is off to its best start through 24 games since 2009-2010, when the 'Dogs went 28-3 heading into the Big South tournament.
GWU is one of only three women's Division I teams in the Carolinas to reach 20 wins so far – joined by South Carolina and Duke in that club. The Runnin' Bulldogs are one of only four women's or men's teams at 20 wins this season in the Carolinas, with College of Charleston's men also in that quartet.
Wednesday's game will stream live on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com), with live radio on ESPNCLT.com.
