CLEMSON – Gardner-Webb faced off against another tough non-conference opponent at 1-loss Clemson Wednesday night.
In game one the Tigers got out to a fast start, scoring two runs in the first. The Gardner-Webb defense held true in the second and third, but Clemson used a 6-run fourth inning to take the first game.
Alli Stidham started in the circle for the 'dogs and
Kalyn Kyle pitched the final inning.
Gardner-Webb got the bats going more in game two.
After Clemson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, GWU got on the board in the third inning.
Adrienne Visintine singled to short and
Kasey Fava singled to move her to second. Following an error,
Kiara Kennedy reached first and loaded the bases with two outs. Clemson then walked
Andrea Lyon, scoring a run for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The Tigers added two runs in the fourth to make it 4-1.
After a pitching change,
Emily Garcia doubled to right field to start the fifth. Visintine singled down the right field line and moved Garcia to third. With runners on the corners and two outs, Clemson walked Lyon again to load the bags. Unfortunately, Gardner-Webb was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Garcia registered a hit with Fava and Visintine adding two each in the second game.
Lyon pitched all six innings and struck out two batters.
GWU is next in action Friday, March 3, when it will take on Sacred Heart at 12:00 P.M. in its first game of the Red & Black Classic. The Runnin' Bulldogs are set to play five games over the three-day tournament in Boiling Springs.
