Offense Shines As Gardner-Webb Completes Series Sweep Of NCCU

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb's offense exploded for 20 runs in a dominant victory over North Carolina Central Sunday.
 
Right from the jump Kasey Fava singled and stole second. Annicka McLaughlin bunted her over to third, and Andrea Lyon walked on a wild pitch that scored Fava. Meredith Wayland came in to pinch run for Lyon and advanced to second when Adrienne Visintine walked. Wayland scored and Visintine went to third on two more wild pitches. Freshman Taylor Perry walked, and Bridgette Strobl singled to center field, scoring Visintine and putting Perry on second. Both runners advanced on another ball in the dirt, and Bella Ligotti scored Perry on a ground ball to the short stop, putting the 'dogs in front 4-0 in the first.
 
Alyssa Bonilla doubled down the left field line to start the second. Fava then singled up the middle to add a run. McLaughlin singled and took two bases on passed balls. Fava scored. Wayland, Strobl, and Ligotti all walked, scoring a run before Kayleigh Nicholson batted two in with a single to center field. After a few more walks and wild pitches, Ligotti scored, Bonilla went to second, and Fava to first. McLaughlin then reached on a fielder's choice that scored another run and advanced all of the runners. With the bases loaded, Freshman Meredith Wayland registered the first hit of her collegiate career in the form of a 2-RBI double down the right field line. Following an error, the Runnin' Bulldogs took a 14-0 lead into the third inning.
 
The Eagles got on the board, scoring a run in the third, and two in the fourth.
 
In the bottom of the inning, Wayland walked and took two bases on passed balls. Abbey Goodrum singled up the middle, scoring Wayland. A few more pitches got by the catcher, putting Strobl on second, and Goodrum on third. Emily Garcia then reached first on a fielder's choice and loaded the bases. With the bases loaded, Alyssa Bonilla hit one passed second base, scoring two runs, and putting runners on second and third. Jamie Suppa came to the plate with two outs and hit a 2-RBI triple down the right field line, giving GWU its 18th and 19th runs of the game. Taylor Dreher then singled up the middle to score Suppa and make it 20-3.
 
Fava had two hits in three at-bats with one RBI. Eight Runnin' Bulldogs, Suppa, McLaughlin, Dreher, Wayland, Goodrum, Strobl, Nicholson, and Bonilla all had a hit each.
 
Bonilla, Nicholson, Ligotti, Goodrum, Wayland, and Suppa all had two RBIs. Fava, McLaughlin, Dreher, and Strobl each registered one.
 
Kalyn Kyle took the circle again for Gardner-Webb, striking out six batters in four innings. Clara Wyatt came in, and got the last three outs.
 
GWU has no mid-week game this week. It will resume action March 18 on the first day of a two-day tournament at UNCG. First pitch on Saturday is set for 11:00 A.M. against Army. The Runnin' Bulldogs will face UNCG to follow.
