
Semmartin, Lloclla Sweep Big South Weekly Awards

CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb swept the weekly awards for Women's Tennis on Wednesday from the Big South conference after the team split a pair of conference matches last week. Elise Semmartin was selected as the player of the week while Valeria Lloclla was named the freshman of the week.
Semmartin (Fortenilles, France) won all four of her matches during the week in a narrow 3-4 loss to Presbyterian followed by GWU's first Big South win of the year over Campbell by a 5-2 score. She improved to 5-0 against Big South opponents across all matches this season with the wins this week.
She won 6-0 on #3 doubles on Tuesday in the first match to conclude then claimed the win in the first singles match to conclude. Semmartin moved up a flight and had a 6-2, 6-1 win on the #4 court. She sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 win on Thursday from position #3. Semmartin clinched the team's opening league win of 2023 with her 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory from flight #5 against Campbell.
Lloclla (Lima, Peru) won all four of her matches during the week in a narrow loss to Presbyterian followed by GWU's first Big South win of the year over Campbell. She improved to 3-0 against Big South foes in singles play with both wins this week.
She won 6-0 on #3 doubles on Tuesday in the first match to conclude then pushed the team's lead to 3-0 with her singles victory. Lloclla played up a flight as she had a 6-1, 6-3 win on the #3 court. She sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 win on Thursday from position #3. Lloclla ended the Campbell match with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-5 (3) victory on court #4 for GWU's fifth point of the day.
These mark the fifth and sixth awards from the conference for Gardner-Webb to win this season, three of each award. This was Lloclla's second time to be named freshman of the week and Semmartin's first time receiving a weekly award from the Big South.
Gardner-Webb will look to build on their success from this season with a nonconference match at North Carolina A&T this afternoon and a Big South matchup at Radford (0-1) on Saturday.
