Gardner-Webb Defeats Davidson 6-1 on Sunday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb scored a home win over Davidson on Sunday afternoon. The match lasted north of four hours as the bottom three flights each needed a third set to be decided.

"We played very good in doubles to claim that point," said Head Coach Mike Griffith.

Gardner-Webb had the first point of the afternoon as they won the doubles point. Eduardo Dias and Chrisjan Van Wyk won 6-4 in the topflight for the opening decision of the day. On court #3, the Runnin' Bulldogs' Cathal Butler and Sebastian Harris won 6-4 as well to clinch the point. The match on flight #2 went unfinished as the score stood at 6-6 and was about to start the tiebreaker.

The Wildcats got a straight set win on court #3, but Alex Lepine won his from flight #2 right away to put GWU back ahead by a 2-1 score. Lepine was victorious in his 6-3, 6-3 to end his three-match skid.

Dias came away on top in his after overcoming a 6-5 deficit in the second set and going on to win the final six points of the tiebreaker after trailing 2-1 to seal his win. The final score for the topflight match was 6-4, 7-6 (2) to end his own three-match losing streak.

Numa Lemieux-Monette provided the clincher from court #4, the second clinch this week. He dropped the first set 7-6 (2) but responded in the next two to get the win. The final two sets were 6-1, 6-2 to provide the victory.

Kim Niethammer and Harris each had their decisions go to a third set on courts #5 and #6. Niethammer's was the next to finish with it ending 6-7 (5), 7-5, 10-5 from #5 for his 16th straight win with Harris' on #6 ending shortly after 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 to move to 6-0 from that flight.

"Davidson almost turned the match in their favor, but Eduardo was able to finish really gave us another spark," said Griffith. "I was proud how we responded after dropping sets on courts 4, 5 and 6."

Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Thursday, April 6 after a ten-day break as they face UNC Asheville with a first serve slated for 3:00 p.m. The match will be senior day for the team as it will be the home finale for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

GWU will have a pair of matches remaining this season which include a trip to UNC Wilmington (4/13) and hosting Longwood. The contest against the Lancers is still awaiting its reschedule date as it was supposed to played yesterday, but was pushed back due to expected rain.
