April 12, 2023 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTE – Kim Niethammer was selected as the Big South Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Wednesday afternoon after he picked up his 18th consecutive victory this past week. This marks the sixth time that GWU has taken the award this season.
Niethammer picked up a pair of straight set wins over conference opponents to push his singles win streak to 18 to now be tied for the longest in school history. He also finishes conference play undefeated in singles, the first GWU player to do so since 2019.
GWU swept Longwood 7-0 on Tuesday then had a 4-3 win over UNC Asheville on Thursday. Thursday's victory guaranteed GWU at least a share of the Big South regular season title, their second in program history and first since 2019. He won 6-4, 6-1 from court #5 on Tuesday to clinch the match, then moved up to court #4 for the first time this year on Thursday and didn't skip a beat as he won 6-2, 6-3 to give GWU their second point of the day.
The sophomore is now the fourth different player to win the award from GWU this season and sixth total time it has gone to someone from Gardner-Webb (Eduardo Dias – three times; Alex Lepine – one time, Numa Lemieux-Monette – one time). This is the first time in league history that a team has had four different players win the award in the same season.
Gardner-Webb concludes their regular season ends with a nonconference trip to UNC Wilmington on April 13. They await to find out their official tournament seeding later this week ahead of the Big South Conference Tournament. The Semifinals are slated for Friday, April 21 with the finals for Saturday, April 22 with everything being held at Marion Diehl Park in Charlotte, N.C.
