CHARLESTON, S.C. - Gardner-Webb lost on the road to Charleston Southern, 1-0, after a defensive game Wednesday afternoon.
Â
The Runnin' Bulldogs put a runner on in each of the first two innings, with
Andrea Lyon walking and
Kiara Kennedy reaching on an infield error, but no runs came of the early baserunners.
Â
The 'dogs' best opportunity to get on the board early came in the top of the third inning when freshman
Emily Garcia hit a leadoff single to the shortstop with the top of the order due up.
Kasey Fava and
Annicka McLaughlin made contact, but were unable to reach base, stranding Garcia.
Â
In the bottom of the inning, Charleston Southern threatened to take the lead with a runner on third and two outs. The Bucs hit a ball to shallow center field and Fava made an athletic play, diving underneath it to save the run.
Â
It was not until the bottom of the fifth when CSU would take a 1-0 advantage. Shortstop Ashley Meckley scored the game's only run with an RBI double with two outs.
Â
Gardner-Webb had one last effort with three outs left.
Adrienne Visintine led off the seventh, reaching on an error.
Alyssa Bonilla, who pinch-hit Tuesday, followed with a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. The Runnin' Bulldogs would fall short though, as Charleston Southern turned a double play to end the game.
Â
Andrea Lyon pitched the complete game for Gardner-Webb. Lyon struck out three batters through six innings and allowed just three hits.
Â
GWU will look to bounce back against the top team in the conference on the road. The 'dogs are set to take on the Campbell Camels in a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is at 1:00 P.M. for game one from Amanda Littlejohn Stadium in Buies Creek.
