CHARLOTTE – Women's Tennis swept the final week of Big South weekly awards on Wednesday with a pair of Runnin' Bulldogs taking home the honors. Manon Delsol was selected as the player of the week with Cayline Le Grange being the freshman of the week.
In Gardner-Webb's lone action of the week, their 6-1 win over Radford on Tuesday gave them the crucial win that they needed to propel them into the Big South Championships that begin this weekend. This decision concluded regular season play for GWU and put them at 3-3 in league play as well as three-way tie for third that they needed the fourth scenario to determine the seeding. Aggregate score against each other was used to separate them and Gardner-Webb's was 8-6 against Campbell/Presbyterian Campbell at 7-7 and Presbyterian at 6-8.
Delsol (Moncault, France) clinched the opening point of the day with her doubles victory from the #1 spot as she won 6-2 in it. Delsol then had the match-clinching point in singles from the topflight that also secured the team's spot in the Big South Tournament as the #3 seed in it. She recovered from a first set loss to win the match 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2).
Le Grange (Hoopstad, South Africa) sealed the 6th point of the day for the 'Dogs in the team's win that clinched their playoff berth for 2023. She played in singles on the #6 court and after losing the second set in a tiebreaker, she bounced back to get the win with a third set triumph. The final score for it was 6-2, 6-7 (2), 7-5. This marked her first career win against a Big South opponent.
This marked the third time this season that Gardner-Webb has swept the player of the week awards from the conference and ninth overall award. It is also the second time in 2023 that Delsol has been the POTW and that Le Grange has been the FOTW.
The #3 Runnin' Bulldogs begin their journey in the Big South Championships this Saturday at noon as they will face #2 Charleston Southern. Last year, GWU fell to CSU in the title match and dropped their regular season decision to them 5-2 earlier this season.
