Former Wingate Standout Commits To Gardner-Webb

Jonas Grasmük went 18-1 last season at Wingate
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – After finishing his undergraduate career at Division-II powerhouse Wingate University, Jonas Grasmük has signed with the Gardner-Webb men's tennis program, head coach Mike Griffith announced on Tuesday morning.
Grasmük will compete for the Runnin' Bulldogs this season while obtaining his master's degree. The Dietzenbach, Germany native helped guide the Wingate Bulldogs to a South Atlantic Conference Championship and to the second round of the 2023 NCAA Division-II National Championship. Wingate finished the season ranked No. 11 in the national polls.
"Jonas will be a great addition," said Griffith. "He has experience, drive, and he is a winner. I can't wait to see him up close! With Jonas coming to Gardner-Webb, our team has everything we need to compete this upcoming season, with experience, depth, strong doubles pairs, and top players."
This past season, Grasmük earned Second Team All-SAC honors in singles action, finishing with an impressive 18-1 record, with six of those wins coming against nationally ranked programs. Grasmük earned a win over no. 2 Columbus State at the sixth position, rallying to defeat Justin Welz 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. In the South Atlantic Conference Championship, Grasmük's 6-0, 6-2 win over no. 26 Tusculum helped the Bulldogs clinch their third SAC Championship in the last five seasons. He also went 1-1 in doubles play.
During the 2021-22 season, Grasmük went 9-10 with the Bulldogs in singles action, including a pair of wins over ranked foes in no. 30 Lenoir-Rhyne, defeating Josh Lazenby 6-3, 6-2 and no. 33 Carson-Newman, knocking off Rintaro Oka 6-0, 6-3. In doubles, Grasmük went 6-6, with three wins over ranked competition, including a 7-5 win over No. 11 North Georgia.
Prior to his time at Wingate, Grasmük played tennis for two seasons at Division-II Southern Wesleyan of the Conference Carolinas. In 2021, Grasmük finished 15-0 in singles and 7-6 at doubles, earning First Team Conference Carolinas honors and was a three-time Conference Carolinas Athlete of the Week. In the shortened 2020 season, Grasmük went 6-1 in singles and 6-1 in doubles action his freshman season.
The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team is coming off a 16-7 season, winning the Big South Conference regular season championship and finishing as runner-ups in the Big South Conference tournament.
