CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's tennis team competed in the Dick Stockton Cup this past week from Wednesday, Sept. 6 to Monday, Sept. 11.
Senior
Eduardo Dias was seeded third in the singles tournament and won five matches on his way to a victory. He bested three players representing Charlotte. Two of his matches required a 10-point tiebreaker for the third set. Dias' final match against the top-seeded Thomas Brown also required the same tiebreaker.
The Runnin' Bulldogs second seeded doubles team of
Eduardo Dias and
Chrisjan Van Wyk reached the semifinals in the doubles tournament. They fell to Ivan Dreycopp and Matias Iturbe.
Van Wyk went on to win five singles matches to be crowned consolation champion.
True freshman
Jurie Terblanche picked up wins in rounds one and two of the singles, only being bested Bekhzod Rasamatov in round three. He also won two matches to claim the consolation doubles championship in a third set tiebreaker.
"The quarterfinals of this tournament was played at a high level with all matches being decided by tiebreakers in all four.", said coach Griffith. "This level of tournament was equal to our regional tournament and a very good accomplishment for Eduardo to get the win. Overall, I am pleased with our team and the outlook for the rest of the fall and spring. We will take it one day and one match at a time and now we can look forward to UNCW and Porters Neck Country Club tournament in Wilmington this Friday."
Up next for GWU men's tennis is the UNCW Clay Court Invite. This will take place between Thursday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 17.
