Gardner-Webb Shines in Davidson Fall Invitational

Lepine, Dais, Van Wyk and Niethammer bring home wins at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's tennis team competed in the Davidson Fall Invitational this past weekend winning a pair of Draw A titles and a Draw B title in the tournament.

"I am so proud of the team.", said Coach Griffith. "It was tough competition. We came out on top with all of our players in the finals and winning a lot of them. We refer to Sunday as championship sunday and the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs were there and performed like true champions."

The Runnin' Bulldogs won the Draw A singles and doubles crowns in the tournament. It was an all GWU singles final as junior Alex Lepine bested his teammate senior Eduardo Dias in a close match that required super tiebreaker to decide the third according to tournament rules.

In the Draw A doubles tournament, it was Gardner-Webb that came out on top as Eduardo Dias and Chrisjan Van Wyk defeated Davidson's pairing of Udday Singh and Alejandro Solares by a final of 7-5.  The pair three won matches in total to take the crown.

GWU picked up a third victory in the Draw B singles tournament, as junior Kim Niethammer won three matches to take the title vs UNCG.

Other great GWU performances included freshmen Jurie Terblanche who reached the final of the Draw C singles tournament. Chrisjan Van Wyk reached the final of the Draw D singles tournament and sophomore Johannes Van Wijk reached the finals of the Draw E singles tournament. Freshman Graham Bourne also had a strong showing winning the Draw F round robin singles tournament. He and senior captain Cathal Butler had a strong showing in the B Doubles Draw.

Gardner-Webb won three of the six singles draws and played in the championship in all six. The 'Dawgs finished the weekend with 10-1 record in singles on Friday, a 9-2 record on Saturday, and 7-4 in championship Sunday. The team doubles overall record was 9-6 in the tournament.

Up next for the Runnin' Bulldogs is the ITA All-American Championships. This will take place between Friday, Sept. 29 and Wednesday, Oct. 4.
