Runnin’ Bulldogs Fall to Winthrop in Close Contest

Eagles come from behind to take the game over the ‘Dawgs

ROCK HILL, S.C.  – The Gardner-Webb University women's basketball team dropped their Saturday afternoon contest against Winthrop University by a final score of 61-50. The Runnin' Bulldogs led until the third quarter when the Eagles were able to take and keep the lead.  
 
Gardner-Webb came out the gate hot in the first half as junior guard Ashley Hawkins and freshman forward Andrea Martinez kept the Runnin' Bulldogs in the lead in the first two quarters. A pair of free-throws from Winthrop's Prunelle Mungo with just under five minutes left in the second quarter allowed the Eagles to tie the game 25-25 before Gardner-Webb took a 32-25 lead into the half. Winthrop chipped away at the Gardner-Webb lead throughout the third quarter thanks to Mungo and Marissa Gasaway. With 1:33 left in the third the game sat tied 40-40. Having taken the lead just prior to the fourth quarter. Winthrop continued to get key buckets down the stretch until GWU had to foul to stop the clock. The Eagles ultimately held on to win the ballgame 61-50.

Hawkins led the Runnin' Bulldogs in scoring dropping 13 on the day with five rebounds. She continues to lead the team in scoring with 269. Martinez tallied nine points with four rebounds while Lauren Bailey scored seven points pulling in five rebounds. Ramatoulaye Keita pulled in four rebounds and still leads the team with 123 on the year.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday Jan. 24 as they host Longwood University inside Paul Porter Arena.
