ORANGEBURG, S.C. - With a goal in each half on Friday night, the Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team defeated SC State on the road in non-conference action
In a game of rather few chances, it was the Runnin' Bulldogs who proved to be just clinical enough in front of goal to grab the victory. GWU put only four shots on target in the contest but used a pair of set piece opportunities to find a pair of goals.
Late in the first half, a foul near midfield allowed senior defender
Lea Gossett to float a free kick into the 18-yard box. Freshman defender
Anya Tribune attacked the ball, managing to get a touch back to junior midfielder
Myla West, unmarked in the center who fired on goal. She found the back of the net to give Gardner-Webb a 1-nil lead after 31 minutes.
Holding on to that advantage late into the second half, the Runnin' Bulldogs finally found a second. Off a corner kick, the ball bounced to junior defender
Alva Jonsson in prime shooting space who fired into the far side netting. By the 66th minute, the Red and Black had scored with two of three shots on target in the game to lead 2-nil.
The result wasn't without some strong defensive performances as well, including sophomore goalkeeper
Stephanie Liu who produced the best of her six saves in the contest in the 79th minute. Liu punched a knuckling shot from distance over the crossbar and away from danger to keep SC State off the scoreboard.
The home side continued to push but the Gardner-Webb defense held strong in the final 10 minutes, holding SC State to only a couple late chances, none of which put GWU under much pressure as the Runnin' Bulldogs came away with the win.
Leaders for the Red and Black include Liu with six saves, Jonsson with two shots, and junior defenders
Lina Ullen and
Camila Lezcano who join Gossett and Liu in playing the full 90 minutes.
Next up, GWU plays host to Winthrop on Wednesday night, October 23rd in the 'Dawgs home finale for the season.
