
Runnin' Bulldogs Post Strong Performances at USC Upstate Invite

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb University cross country team competed at the USC Upstate Invite on Saturday morning, with a handful of Runnin' Bulldogs posting top class performances in the event.
In the women's 5k, Jessica Periello was outstanding for GWU, with the junior from Alpharetta, Ga. finishing seventh place overall and besting her previous individual best time by some 54 seconds. Periello crossed the line in 18:02, posting a second-best all time mark for a Runnin' Bulldog athlete. Freshman Megan Devanny was not far behind as one of the best performing freshmen of the entire meet, placing 32nd overall with a time of 18:43 and a sixth best time all-time.
Other finishers in the women's 5k include Emily Leatherman in 19:15, freshman Brooke Hope in 19:38 with a top-20 all time record time for GWU, graduate Jennifer Escalera with a 44-second PR and a time of 19:59, senior Teryn Bour who finished in 21:04, sophomore Evelyn Gordon in 21:07 and sophomore Lys Ishiari who set a new personal best by over 3:00 minutes, crossing the line in 29:09.
In the men's 8k, the Runnin' Bulldogs saw three athletes set PR times. Senior Ryan Morita paced the men's field for GWU, finishing his race in 27:18. Just behind would be freshman Michael Fletcher in 28:17 and ahead of sophomore Kaden Platt who in 28:34, PR'd by over 12 seconds.
Senior Mark Mellon chalked up a second PR for Gardner-Webb, with his 29:01 time being a personal best by some 33 seconds. Freshman Gabe Morrison came in just behind, also posting his own record time of 29:21. Other finishers for men's cross country include freshman Luke York in 33:54 and junior John Marsh in 34:23
Next up for Cross Country, GWU takes on the 2024 Big South Championship Meet, scheduled for November 1st in Charleston, S.C.
