Boyer and Burton Collect Top 10 Finishes; Men's Golf Sixth at Ironwood Collegiate Classic

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's golf team posted a season-low combined score of 563 (-13) while finishing sixth at the Ironwood Collegiate Classic hosted by East Carolina University on September 30-Ocotber 1.
The Runnin' Bulldogs, in an event that was shortened due to unfavorable weather conditions, posted a 282 (-6) in the opening round before finishing the 36-hole event with a 281 (-7).
Junior Jack Boyer and freshman Reed Burton led the way for GWU after both firing combined scores of 138 (-6) and a top 10 finish. Boyer tallied identical rounds of 69 (-3) while Burton turned in a team-low and collegiate-best 66 (-6) in round one followed by an even-par, 72 over the final 18.
Freshman Will Spicer also turned in his best tournament of his young career, carding a 144 (-2) over two rounds. He opened play with a 73 (+1) before picking up the pace in round two, finishing with a solid score of 69 (-3). In a field full of stiff competition, Spicer landed in 33rd.
Graduate Mark Chandler posted scores of 74 (+2) and 71 (-1) while combining for a total score of 145 (+1) and a finish of 53rd.
Junior Maddox Whittington rounded out the top 5 for Gardner-Webb, posting a combined score of 149 (+5). After carding a 76 (+4) in round one, Whittington shaved three strokes over the final 18 for a 73 (+1).
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on October 14-15, traveling to Elon, N.C. to take part in the Phoenix Intercollegiate.
