Runnin' Bulldogs Beaten on the Road at Richmond

RICHMOND, VA - The Gardner-Webb University women's basketball team suffered a non-conference setback on Friday morning, falling to Richmond out of the A10 by a final score of 92-44

The Runnin' Bulldogs fell behind early in a second consecutive Education Day contest, this time unable to recover against the home-standing Spiders. Richmond jumped in front 22-5 after one quarter of play, eventually taking a commanding 41-12 lead into halftime. A strong third quarter from Gardner-Webb did at least help build some momentum, but a 32 point fourth quarter from Richmond helped to put the game out of reach.

Sophomore guard Lauren Bailey continued to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs from three point territory, this time with a team-high three made three pointers and a second team-high three made field goals, ending the game with nine points. Bailey gave GWU its first lead of the night with 8:27 to go in the first quarter, connecting from long range to put the 'Dawgs in front 3-2. Bailey was particularly strong in an 18-point third quarter for Gardner-Webb, with her two other made triples.

Senior guard Ashley Hawkins returned to double figure scoring early on Friday, hitting on 4 of 8 field goals, scoring 11 points to go with two rebounds, two assists and a steal. The Long Beach, Calif. native really got going late in the contest, scoring six straight points between 3:09 and 1:03 remaining in the third quarter.

Sophomore guard Nyla Walker and freshman guard Kendall Scott also played some of their strongest minutes of the season so far late in the contest. In 18 minutes, Scott scored what has been a season high to this point, six points on two made field goals, one three, and a pair of made free throws. The Fredericksburg, Va. native scored four of her six points in a row for GWU in the final 2:58. Meanwhile, Walker managed five points in eight minutes including her first made three of the season with 3:21 left in the game.

From here, it's a short turnaround for Gardner-Webb, as the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to James Madison on Sunday at 2 p.m.
