ROANOKE, VA - The Gardner-Webb University wrestling team competed at the 2024 Southeast Open, hosted by Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon, with three freshmen Runnin' Bulldogs performing well enough to post top finishes in bracket competition among the standouts.

Freshman Ty Edwards finished as Gardner-Webb's top performer on Saturday afternoon, scoring a third place overall finish in the 141 pound class. Edwards scored a 5-1 decision over VMI, an 8-2 decision over Davidson, and one last 8-0 major decision, before coming up short by 4-1 decision against his opposition from Campbell.

In the 285 pound class, freshman Mason Blue scored a fourth place finish in his first meet with the Runnin' Bulldogs. 4-3 and 6-0 decisions respectively over opponents from West Virginia propelled Blue, just ahead of defeats to Virginia and Campbell, both by fault for the Wilmington, N.C. native.

Another strong finisher for Gardner-Webb was Jackson Potts in 174 pounds. Potts a 12-3 major decision to open the day against Franklin & Marshall, also scoring a 13-3 major decision against Chattanooga in another SoCon versus SoCon match-up. The freshman from Bend, Oregon ended the day in sixth place in his class following a 13-5 loss by major decision to Morgan State.

Jeffrey Jacome finished the day as one of the top performing upper-classmen for Gardner-Webb, scoring fifth in the 125 pound division. Jacome put forth an admirable bout against back to back opponents from North Carolina before picking up a result against Noke Wrestling RTC to complete his day

Elsewhere for the Runnin' Bulldogs, sophomore Edison Flores scored an 8-5 decision in 184 pounds over Franklin & Marshall, freshman Grant Kress grabbed a solo win over Chattanooga by virtue of a 15-0 tech fall in the 165 pound weight class, while junior Tyler Lamon scored one for himself by fault over Newberry in the 133 pound division.

The Runnin' Bulldogs now prepare for Throwdown on The Yorktown in Charleston on November 8th, where GWU will take on West Point and Virginia on the deck of the USS Yorktown
