Volleyball Suffers Road Defeat to High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb University volleyball team fell on the road to High Point on Saturday afternoon, losing by a final score of 3-0

The home-standing Panthers took control in the first set with a 25-12 win, held kept Gardner-Webb from a rally in the second by a 25-17 score, and finished off the Runnin' Bulldogs 25-12 again in the third set to complete the sweep.

In the contest, GWU actually started rather strong, with a 3-3 tie in the opening frame. Isabel Sandstrum played a big part early for the 'Dawgs, grabbing two of the first three points of the game for the Red and Black. Gardner-Webb stayed within reach nearing the first media timeout before HPU began to pull away. Freshman outside hitter Samia Sayd and graduate middle Alivia Rew scored the Runnin' Bulldogs final two points in a 25-12 loss.

In the second, once again High Point got going around the media timeout, eventually opening up a 22-13 lead and seemingly the finish line. GWU put together a strong run to try and get back in the set from there, scoring four of the next five points, with one each from Sayd and Sandstrum who both continued solid games. HPU then scored the final two points back to back, winning the set 25-17

In the third, High Point never looked back from as much as a 22-8 lead, as they closed the Runnin' Bulldogs out in a sweep. GWU did briefly find a rhythm late in the going however with three straight points. A service error, an attack error and a bad set by the Panthers allowed the Runnin' Bulldogs to close to 23-12 before HPU finished off a 25-12 win and a 3-0 final score.

Leaders for Gardner-Webb include Sandstrum with nine kills, junior setter Morgan Hornaday with eight assists, sophomore libero Molly Littlefield with 11 digs.

Gardner-Webb now prepares to host UNC Asheville for a second time, with the Bulldogs visiting Paul Porter Arena on November 8th at 6 p.m.
